UK unveils £ 5bn defence priority for drones

Britain unveiled its“Belated” defence investment plans on the same day, Reuters reported on June 30. The plan prioritises # 5BN for drones, with a focus on autonomous systems. The move follows months of wrangling between the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury over how to fill a funding gap estimated at up to £ 28bn. Defense Minister John Healy, who resigned earlier this month, accused Prime Minister David Stamer of failing to raise the money needed to keep the country safe.

Stammer’s defense plan focuses on attack drones and autonomous combat aircraft, as well as unmanned ships and submarines. Under the new Defence Investment Plan, plans to replace ageing destroyers will be abandoned in favour of at least six“General purpose combatants” to serve as control hubs for unmanned systems.

“This game-changing investment will strengthen the capabilities of the Army, Navy and Air Force,” stammer said, according to the British defense magazine, unmanned systems have been a“Decisive factor” in the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the funding is Britain’s biggest investment to date in the sector. Unmanned systems are defining modern warfare, he added, and the defense investments he has helped reshape over the past few weeks will ensure soldiers get the technology they need faster.

The announcement was delayed by about nine months, Reuters said, as critics questioned whether Britain was willing or able to increase defence spending. Britain’s defence chiefs said the scheme would be funded by just £ 15bn against a £ 28bn shortfall over the next four years.

According to the BBC, the Shadow Defence Secretary, Peter Carterridge, said the defence investment plan had been“Rushed through because of instamer’s eagerness to leave a legacy”, however, he is currently prime minister in name only. Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper said Burnham, who is widely expected to succeed him as Prime Minister, had seen and approved the defence investment plans, but 10 Downing Street declined to confirm this. The BBC said Starmer had unveiled defence investment plans in the final weeks of his premiership, which could strain his relationship with his successor. (burdensome)
