South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Today (May 20) labor negotiations broke down again, starting tomorrow will hold a general strike. It will also be the biggest strike in the company’s history.

In mid-march, a vote by more than 66,000 union members at Samsung Electronics showed 93.1 per cent were in favour of a strike. A general strike will be held from May 21 to June 7.

However, the Suwon District Court on May 18 granted Samsung Electronics’ request for a partial injunction, ordering the company’s union to ensure that the forthcoming general strike action“Does not affect production”, “Shall not lead to damage to the production materials of the world’s important memory chip maker.”.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Samsung Electronics, as an important memory chip manufacturer in the world, if there is a strike, it may further aggravate the global semiconductor supply tightening situation caused by the continuous heating up of global artificial intelligence data center construction, which may affect many industries such as automobiles, computers and smartphones.

Samsung Electronics Labor and management had held multiple rounds of wage talks for 2026, but the two sides continued to widen differences on some issues, the talks eventually broke down. ( Tang Xin)
