Publication of Biden‘s recording, U.S. government criticized for political retaliation

Recordings of former U.S. President Joe Biden, whose confidentiality he has insisted on for many years, have now been made public. CNN reported on the 27th that the right-wing U.S. organization “Monitoring Project” released audio clips of Biden‘s conversations with his biographer Zvonitzer on the same day. These content seem to confirm the conclusions of former special prosecutor Robert Hull in his 2024 report: Biden has revealed confidential information, has memory decline, and still holds confidential documents after leaving office as vice president.

CBS reported that in February 2024, Special Prosecutor Robert Hull of the Department of Justice released a report on the investigation into Biden‘s classified documents, which for the first time sparked public scrutiny and great controversy. The investigation began when staff found classified documents from Biden‘s vice-presidential tenure in his home and private office. Hull ultimately recommended no prosecution. Hull wrote in the report that as early as 2016, Biden had “difficulty remembering events,” “cognitive decline,” and “unusually slow” conversation.

After two years of court proceedings, the Monitoring Project successfully pushed for the release of the recording. The organization declared its goal to “reveal and eradicate corruption within the government.” “Some of this may be classified information… You must be careful. I can‘t be sure… These documents are not marked as classified, but…” Biden said again in another part of the recording, “The material I‘m about to show you is, well, classified information…” A recording obtained by CBS News showed Biden telling Zwonitzer about several suspected classified meetings, including “large meetings with various parties such as the Central Intelligence Agency”, “high-level meetings in the White House Situation Room” and “long meetings of the Defense Department reporting to the President”.

Biden‘s spokesperson, Daclo, issued a statement to CBS News: “More than ten years ago, President Biden made talks for the writing of a book. The content involved his deceased son and was private information. When submitted to the Justice Department, both sides clearly agreed to keep it confidential. Now the official attitude has reversed and is made public. This is the latest example of this administration‘s weaponization of the Justice Department for political retaliation. This move is not appropriate.”
