The International Organization for Standardization has recently officially released five international standards in the field of natural gas, which were developed under the leadership of China, these include the series of standards for shale gas development entitled“Determination and calculation of shale brittleness index” and“Slickwater performance test and requirements”, as well as sulfur gas reservoir series of two international standards“Determination of elemental sulfur solubility by saturated dissolution method” and“Laser absorption spectrometry determination of hydrogen sulfide”. These international standards will provide a“China solution” for the global energy market to reduce costs, increase efficiency and ensure security through accurate quantitative indicators.

According to the introduction, in the development of shale gas, the series standards of“Determination and calculation of shale brittleness index” aim at the pain points of difficult identification of high-quality reservoirs and high fracturing costs in shale gas development, for the first time, the technical framework of fracability evaluation has been standardized at the international level. After the application of this standard, the identification accuracy of high-quality shale reservoirs is expected to increase by about 10% , which can support the success rate of single-well exploration and development from 65% to more than 85% . The operation cost of a single shale gas well can be reduced by more than 10% .
“Slickwater performance test and requirements” is the first international product standard in the field of shale gas developed by China. The standard system regulates slick quality requirements and performance test methods, test accuracy is increased to more than 90% , will greatly reduce trade and arbitration disputes. Two other chinese-led international standards for sour natural gas will address the problem of sulfur deposition and quality monitoring.
According to the introduction, about 40% of the world’s proven natural gas reserves are high-sulfur gas reservoirs, which are extremely difficult to develop because of sulfur deposition. The release of“Determination of elemental sulfur solubility by saturated dissolution method” provides a scientific means for safe and clean development. Relying on this standard, the trend of sulfur deposition can be accurately predicted, and a dynamic early warning model for the development of sulfur-containing gas fields can be established, it is expected to support an average annual increase of about 70 million cubic meters in a single gas field. The international standard“Determination of hydrogen sulfide by laser absorption spectroscopy” establishes a high-precision and high-efficiency international unified technical specification for on-line monitoring of natural gas, and realizes the rapid and accurate detection of corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide. Based on this standard, the global more than 40,000 km of cross-border pipelines can achieve real-time and accurate monitoring of hydrogen sulfide content, effectively avoiding the risk of pipeline corrosion and unplanned shutdown.
So far, China has led the development and publication of 14 international standards for natural gas, adopted by more than 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, including the UK, France, Germany, South Korea and Kenya.
Jin radium, a professor at the School of Economics and management of the China University of Petroleum (Beijing) , told the global times on the 12th that the standard, which was developed under the leadership of China, was officially released by the International Organization for Standardization, it shows that China’s experience and technical strength in natural gas development have been recognized by international organizations, which lays an important foundation for the“China Plan” to go global.
Jin radium believes that the escalation of the situation in the Middle East has led to a global energy crisis, and that the standards led by China focus on“Reducing costs, increasing efficiency, and improving quality,” and are more realistic to be published by the International Organization for Standardization, it will provide a“China solution” for the world to develop better energy with lower cost and higher efficiency, which is beneficial to global economic development and people’s well-being.
