Asked at a briefing whether South Africa had been excluded from an invitation to the G7 summit at the request of the US, a French official said no, Reuters continued. French foreign minister Francois Barro said France had“Not bowed to any pressure” and had opted for a“Lite version of the G7”, AFP reported.

A U.S. state department official later said, “We are not asking France to exclude South Africa from the G7.” A White House official also supported the French claim, it said the decision to invite Kenya was made after consultations among G7 members, but did not comment directly on South Africa’s exclusion from the G7 invitation list.

Since Trump became president of the United States in January 2025, the relationship between the United States and South Korea has continued to be tense in many fields such as politics, economy and diplomacy. Washington cut off aid to South Africa on the grounds that the government’s land policies constituted racial discrimination against white South Africans, expelled the ambassador and skipped a G20 summit in Johannesburg last November. On Nov. 26, Trump said in a social media post that South Africa would not be invited to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami. A few days later, Ramaphosa addressed the nation and said South Africa would continue to participate fully and constructively in the G20.
