The Defense minister of South Korea said he had not received a formal request from the U.S. to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz and had not yet discussed whether to send warships to the Middle East, according to the Korean News Service on Thursday.

When asked about the matter at a full defense committee meeting held in Congress on the same day, Ahn said that the South has not yet received a formal request from the United States to send troops to the Strait of Hormuz, “[U.S. President Trump’s] comments on social media don‘t count.”
An emphasized that according to the Korean Constitution, the dispatch of troops must be approved by the parliament. Currently, there is no discussion on whether to dispatch troops to the Middle East.
Trump posted on social media on the 14th that he hoped South Korea, Britain, France, and other countries would send warships to ensure the Strait of Hormuz “remains open and safe.”
