After the opening of the new north runway in November 2022, the middle runway was temporarily closed for reconfiguration and the airport continued to operate with two runways. The reconfiguration work includes the re-formation of the runway surface to accommodate the taxiway connection, the construction of new taxiways for the runway entrances and exits, and the construction of new ring-end taxiways at both ends of the middle runway. The middle runway successfully completed a test flight in September this year.

The AA said it would start preparations with its business partners for the phased opening of the expanded Terminal 2 from the end of 2025. The preparatory work includes on-site preparation of various passenger transport services, leasing of retail stores and service shops, etc. .

Construction of the three-runway system at the Hong Kong International Airport commenced in August 2016. The works include the construction of a new 3,800-metre-long third runway and the expansion of the Passenger Terminal 2, construction of the T2 Passenger Corridor, new People mover and baggage handling system.
