A French lawmaker has proposed banning plastic bottles smaller than 500ml to reduce environmental pollution, Euronews reported Tuesday.

According to Cazenove, a member of the French parliament, bottled water with a capacity of less than 500ml is a “Ridiculous existence”. The 330,250 or 170 milliliters of bottled drinks that people throw away after just a few sips have wasted 20-25 grams of plastic, causing serious damage to the environment. Cazenove recently introduced a bill calling for a ban on plastic bottles under 500ml. The bill now needs to be debated, voted on and passed by a majority. The bill now has the support of environmental groups. About two-thirds of French people support the ban, according to a poll.

France produces at least 13 billion plastic bottles a year, much of which are not recycled and end up in the ocean where they wreak havoc on the environment. If nothing is done to curb the phenomenon, according to the organisation for Economic Co-operation and development, plastic will grow to 1.231 bn tonnes by 2060, with devastating consequences for biodiversity and human health. Although France has introduced a ban on single-use plastic products related to the law, but plastic water bottles are not applicable.

In addition, given that small bottles of water are ideal for children and travelers, consumer habits will have to change if they are to be completely banned.
