In an editorial published recently in the journal cell research, more than 20 experts called for a major expansion and deepening of research into the human genome, start the Human Genome Project 2(HGP2) as soon as possible.

Through the HGP2 project, experts propose to sequence the genomes of 1% of the world’s population (about 80 million people) in more than 100 countries to identify, map and sequence all human genomes, ultimately, precision medicine for everyone.

The core of precision medicine is to tailor medical and preventive strategies to the specific characteristics of individuals or specific groups, taking into account individual differences in such factors as genome, environment and lifestyle. Precision medicine involves the use of advanced technology, data analysis and interventions to prevent disease, promote human health and improve the overall quality of the population.

In addition to sequencing the genes of 1% of the global population, the HGP2 project’s mandate includes in-depth analysis of genetic variants and development of proven intervention strategies to prevent disease. The HGP2 project will open up new possibilities for more people to use their genomes to live healthier and longer lives, thus fulfilling the original goals and aspirations of the human genome project.

Experts also warn that scientists around the world should work together to ensure that future generations have access to accurate medical treatments. If left unchecked, precision medicine could become a privilege of rich countries, with wealth inequality exacerbating health inequality.
