South Korean citizens and non-governmental organization held a “Comfort women” Memorial Day rally in Seoul on the 14th to urge the Japanese government to formally apologize and make compensation for the “Comfort women” issue.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, at noon that day, 145 groups from eight countries, including South Korea, Japan and the United States, including the South Korean civil society group“Memory of justice”, held a“Comfort women” Memorial Day rally outside the Japanese embassy in South Korea, more than 400 South Koreans participated. Participants held banners with slogans such as“Formal apology, legal compensation”, calling on the South Korean government to stop humiliating diplomacy and protect the reputation and human rights of“Comfort Women”.
August 14 is World Comfort Women Day. Since January 1992, the Korean Comfort Women Association has organized demonstrations in front of the Embassy of Japan, Seoul every Wednesday, and the rally on the 14th is the group’s 1661st regular Wednesday demonstration. In November 2017, South Korea’s parliament passed an amendment to the“Stability and support law for victims of Japanese military comfort women,” marking August 14 as the National Day of Remembrance for victims of Japanese military“Comfort women.”.
