In an op-ed Peter Welch in the Washington Post, the Vermont Democratic Senator called on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race for the highest office in the government, he called his performance in the televised debate with the Donald Trump “Disastrous” and said the country’s stakes were too high.
“Like the rest of the country, I am concerned about the November elections. The stakes are higher than ever. We can not ignore President Biden’s disastrous televised debate. We can not ignore or ignore the pressing issues raised since that night,” Welch wrote.
At the same time, he stressed his respect for the current occupant of the White House, praising him for“Freeing the country from tyranny”. Welch said Biden represented “A man of great integrity who was deeply involved in the cause of American democracy”.
“He’s one of the best presidents of our time,” the Vermont Senator said.
Biden’s performance in his first debate with Republican Donald Trump in Atlanta on the night of June 28 was widely seen in the US media as poor. The current US president stuttered, paused and did not always express himself clearly, and after the event television cameras captured Biden’s wife, Qir, helping him down the stairs.
Now politicians and journalists say the Democrats may refuse to nominate Biden and replace him with another candidate. In theory, the party would have such an opportunity at its national convention in August, but in practice it would be difficult to remove Biden, the winner of the primary, from the race unless he refused to take part. Meanwhile, the President’s headquarters said he would not drop out of the race. There are reports that he could be nominated as a presidential candidate as early as July 21, without having to wait for the party congress in August.
The second biden-Donald Trump debate is scheduled for September 10. The US presidential election will be held on November 5th.
