Opening of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital and government testing centre

The Hong Kong Hospital of Chinese Medicine and the government testing centre of Chinese medicine held the opening ceremony on the 13th with the theme of“Flagship navigation and connecting the world”.

Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Lee Ka-chiu, attended the ceremony and said that traditional Chinese medicine is an important part of Hong Kong’s medical system, hong Kong also has the strength to meet international standards in such areas as its healthcare system, regulatory regime, standard setting and clinical research. The HKSAR Government will make every effort to promote the high-quality development of traditional Chinese medicine and give full play to Hong Kong’s unique advantages of“Backing the motherland and connecting the world” under the“One country, two systems” principle, to make Hong Kong a bridgehead for TCM to go global.

Lee said the government last month published Hong Kong’s first blueprint for the development of traditional Chinese medicine, which outlines a long-term vision for the development of traditional Chinese medicine. Hong Kong Hospital of Traditional Chinese medicine and the government testing centre of traditional Chinese medicine are the two flagship organizations for the development of traditional Chinese medicine. Together with the blueprint, they will promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine services, personnel training, industrial research and other fields.

Lei Haichao, director of the National Health Commission, said in his speech that since the SAR government announced in 2014 that it was preparing to build a traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital and in 2015 announced the establishment of a government traditional Chinese medicine testing center, after more than 10 years of continuous efforts, the completion of these two landmark projects will play a positive role in promoting the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicine.

Lei Haichao made relevant suggestions on the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Hong Kong, including serving the people of Hong Kong, promoting the coordinated development of industry, university and research, integrating resources and promoting innovation, so as to help build the highland of traditional Chinese medicine in the Guangdong-hong Kong-macao Greater Bay area. He hopes to promote the construction of the Guangdong-hong Kong-macao Greater Bay Area TCM Medical Consortium and TCM Hospital cluster by taking the opportunity of the service of the first TCM Hospital in Hong Kong. Through the establishment of academicians, TCM Masters and National Famous TCM workstations, we will attract high-level TCM experts and compound talents from home and abroad to gather in the Bay Area, build a highland for TCM talents, and promote TCM to better go to the world.

On the same day, Zhou Ji, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Yu Yanhong, director of the State Administration of traditional Chinese medicine, and Lu Chongmao, director of the medical and Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, attended the unveiling ceremony.

The Hong Kong Hospital of Chinese Medicine (HKCHC) began operation on December 11,2025, offering services in six branches, including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, Pediatrics, Orthopaedics and acupuncture.
