The US Trump administration opened a special page on the White House website on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the“Capitol Hill riots” on the 6th, trying to reshape the narrative of the incident, it said Democrats had labelled“Peaceful demonstrators” as“Insurgents”. Democrats also held related activities the same day, accusing Republicans of“Whitewashing history.”.
This special page first highlighted that Trump pardoned or commuted the sentences of nearly 1,600 participants in the“Capitol Riots” on his first day in office last year, it said many of them had been treated as“Rebels” by the Justice Department under former Democratic President Joe Biden for simply“Trespassing” or“Peaceful demonstrations”.
The page features black-and-white photos of Trump’s“Sworn Enemy,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and others, accusing Pelosi and other Democrats of using a lot of energy and money to“Spin the insurgency narrative” and putting all the blame on Trump, there was no evidence of“Armed rebellion” or“Attempts to overthrow the government”.
The website called the Biden administration and some Republicans engaged in“Witch hunts” and“Witch hunts,” and cited the House Executive Branch Oversight Subcommittee’s December 2024 Interim Report, “Capitol Hill riots” exposed serious security holes, mainly due to the democratic camp and the Pentagon’s“Politicized decision-making.
Trump claimed“Massive fraud” after seeking re-election in the 2020 presidential election. On January 6,2021, a large number of Trump supporters broke into the capitol building and interrupted the joint meeting of the House and Senate to certify Biden as the winner of the presidential election. Several people were killed, hundreds of police officers were injured and millions of dollars in property was destroyed. Trump was indicted on four federal charges in August 2023 for the Capitol riots, but Special Counsel Jack Smith, who led the investigation, dropped the charges after Trump won the 2024 presidential election, on the grounds that US federal law prohibits the prosecution of sitting presidents.
The Washington Post said Friday that the Trump administration is“Still obsessed with false narratives” five years after the“Capitol Hill riots,” such as a web page that says no law enforcement officers were killed, but U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Siknik died the day after the attack. However, instead of mentioning Siknik, the page highlights the deaths of nine“Peaceful demonstrators”, five of whom committed suicide as a result of“Relentless persecution”. The report also pointed out that the web page that the then Vice President Pence has the power to overturn the election results, Pelosi is responsible for the security breaches of the Capitol is untrue. Pence declined to comment. Ms Pelosi’s spokesman said the Trump administration’s“Ongoing attempts to whitewash the deadly insurgency are shameful, unpatriotic and deplorable”.
Earlier on the 6th, Democrats also for the“Capitol Hill riots” held activities against the republicans, “Whitewashing history. Among the guests was former Trump supporter and Capitol Hill rioter Pamela Hemphill, who said she“Made a mistake” and refused a pardon last year.
In June 2021, Pelosi as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives decided to establish a“Capitol Hill riots” investigation committee, members are appointed by her. In December 2022, the Committee released its final report, which said the main cause of the incident was Trump.
“It’s important that we remember exactly what happened,” Benny Thompson, the Democratic chairman of the committee at the time, said on Sunday. “January 6 is not your typical tourist day.” There were“Bloody riots that brought our democracy to the brink of collapse”. (sea)
