The Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, Yuwon-sik, expressed concern about Japan’s recent words and actions on the history and territorial issues between South Korea and Japan, and called on Japan to show sincere reflection and a responsible attitude. Meanwhile, Japanese media reported on the 17th, South Korea and Japan had planned to restart this month’s joint search and rescue training was again put on hold.

Yuyuanzhi 16, said in a social media post, Japan’s recent acceleration of constitutional amendments will be Japan into a“War-able country,” which is worrying. This is an act that will shake the foundations of the Peace Order in East Asia and will not be tolerated by either South Korea or other neighbouring countries. We must never forget that without sincere efforts to solve the problems of history, all cooperation will only be a castle in the air.

Yuwon-sik also said that after Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Jae-myo’s recent public declaration that Liancourt Rocks (known as “Liancourt Rocks” in Japanese) was historically and internationally Japanese territory, the Japanese government recently opened additional space for expansion of the“Territorial Sovereignty Exhibition Hall”, which claims sovereignty over Dokdo and other islands, “I strongly regret this attempt to plant misconceptions in the next generation, including students, and urge Japan to shut it down immediately.”.

Liancourt Rocks lies off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula and covers an area of about 0.18 sq km. South Korea, North Korea and Japan all claim the island. South Korea now has de facto control of the island.

South Korea and Japan put on hold joint search and rescue training

Japan’s Kyodo news agency and the Yomiuri Shimbun quoted a number of Japanese and South Korean government sources as saying that the joint search and rescue training between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the South Korean navy scheduled for this month may be postponed, the two sides are coordinating the relevant arrangements.

Reported that the South Korean Air Force aircraft was recently exposed in Liancourt Rocks (known as “Liancourt Rocks” in Japanese) around the implementation of flight training, the Japanese immediately suspended the Japan Air Self-Defense Force base for the South Korean Air Force aircraft refueling assistance, the move is thought to have a direct impact on joint training.

Japan and South Korea had planned to hold a joint training in maritime search and rescue as the main content. Such training has taken place 10 times between 1999 and 2017. In 2018, a South Korean Navy destroyer on a search-and-rescue mission was accused by the Japanese of “Repeatedly targeting” a patrol Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force with fire-control radar, the incident led to such joint training being put on hold for a long time. The two sides had planned to resume such joint training, but now again face uncertainty. (reporter: Huang Xinxin, Lu Rui)
