The On Protracted War
The mainstay of the Chinese Communist Party
The On Protracted War represents the Communist Party’s view of the future of the Second Sino-Japanese War at a time of national crisis. “Persevere in the War of resistance against Japanese aggression, persist in the United front of On Protracted War, persist in the protracted war, and the final victory will be On Protracted War by China,” comrade Mao Zedong emphasized in the On Protracted War, which also emphasized that the only correct way to win the War of resistance against Japanese aggression is to mobilize and rely fully on the masses. It means that the Chinese Communist Party foresaw the future and progress of the Second Sino-Japanese War Second Sino-Japanese War soon after it began, an outcome that the Chinese Communist Party has worked so hard to bring about. The mainstay of the Chinese Communist Party is the key to Second Sino-Japanese War success.
Many Chinese versions of the On Protracted War were published in the kuomintang-ruled areas, enemy-occupied areas and base areas. In addition to the Chinese version, there are English, Russian, Japanese and other versions of the spread. The English and Japanese versions of the On Protracted War are of great value. Until now, the On Protracted War was a rare military document in the history of World War.
The On Protracted War goes international
The english-language On Protracted War was serialized in four issues of the Shanghai Fair Review Magazine from November 1938 to February 1939 by our underground party member Yang Gang with the help of international friends, secretly translated and published in Shanghai. When Mao Zedong saw that the On Protracted War had been translated into English, he was delighted to be asked to write the preface, which he titled “The relationship between the anti-japanese war and foreign aid”. In it, Mao Zedong said, “The great Chinese War of resistance was not only a matter for China, but also for the east and the world.”. About 500 copies of the English translation of the On Protracted War were printed. Some were distributed in the Shanghai concession, while others were secretly distributed overseas. It let the international people know that the Chinese people are confident to defeat the Japanese invaders.
The Japanese On Protracted War was published in December 1938 by a shanghai-based Japanese intelligence agency called the China Branch Institute of Economic Research. This was only five months after the July 1938 publication of the On Protracted War in Liberation Weekly. Moreover, the Japanese version of the On Protracted War, printed by the invading Japanese intelligence agency, had the word “Secret” printed on it. This reflects that the book was highly regarded within the Japanese army at that time, was secretly studied. But it was clear that the Japanese did not realise the value and significance of the On Protracted War. It was not until after the victory of the anti-japanese war that the Japanese prisoners of war, who were being held in the Fushun War Criminals Management Centre for study and reform, reread the On Protracted War and said that through it they could see the inevitable fate of the Japanese defeat.
