Hong Kong SAR government: strongly opposed to the and Australian Asylum for two wanted criminals, has summoned the consul-general of the two countries

According to a press release issued by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on August 18, two Hong Kong fugitives who fled overseas in connection with crimes against national security have been granted asylum in Australia and the United Kingdom respectively, a spokesman for the HKSAR Government expressed strong opposition.

A spokesman for the HKSAR Government said that the Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan had summoned the consul-general of Australia in the afternoon of May 18 and the consul-general of the United Kingdom in Hong Kong, David Brian Davidson, respectively. At the meeting, Eric Chan said sternly that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government was opposed to any country sheltering criminals in any form and was strongly dissatisfied with any act of sheltering criminals under any pretext. He reiterates that an act of cover-up is tantamount to exempting certain persons or organizations from the legal consequences of their violations and is tantamount to granting them the privilege of breaking the law. In harbouring the criminals concerned, Australia and the United Kingdom have completely trampled on and violated the principles and spirit of the rule of law, and are in no way conducive to the relationship between the HKSAR and the two governments.

Dr Eric Chan stressed to the consul-general of the two countries that Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law and that laws must be observed and those who violate them must be punished. The Hong Kong Police, as the Law Enforcement Department of the HKSAR to Safeguard National Security, has the responsibility to investigate and prosecute the alleged evil acts of endangering national security abroad in accordance with the law. The criminals who have been on the run abroad are wanted because they continue to engage openly in activities endangering national security on the ground. The Hong Kong Police take all lawful measures to combat the absconding activities, including applying to the court for an arrest warrant to arrest the persons concerned.
