TSMC has been sued again in the US. Recently, the U. S. Media revealed that TSMC in the United States, including repeated allegations of discrimination and unsafe working conditions and other issues. TSMC has faced class-action lawsuits in the US over allegations of discrimination and hostility towards non-east Asian employees, as well as sexual harassment.
According to reports, 17 plaintiffs recently filed a class-action lawsuit against TSMC, filing more than 160 pages of charges. A Californian woman who works in TSMC’s human resources department said the company preferred Taiwanese and Chinese mainland staff. Several plaintiffs allege that they were subjected to a hostile work environment, with TSMC expelling US staff and replacing them with foreign workers.
In response, TSMC said: “Our policy is not to comment on litigation outside of court documents.”
The bad news for TSMC is not confined to the US.
According to the Wall Street Journal, people familiar with the matter said TSMC is delaying construction of a second plant in the country, in part because the company is pre-empting tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration, speed up investment in expansion in the United States.
TSMC’s adjustment to the plan is another sign that Washington’s tough stance on trade is attracting some investment to the US at the expense of allies, the report said. Several big technology companies have pledged to expand production of artificial intelligence servers in the US, where they are made in places such as Mexico and Taiwan.
TSMC said early last year it would build a second plant in Kumamoto Prefecture, in southern Japan. It is part of a $20bn investment programme in Japan for which the government has pledged more than $8bn in support.
TSMC’s first Japanese plant began making chips for customers such as Toyota last autumn. Construction of the second plant was originally scheduled to start early this year. Wei Zhejia, TSMC chairman, said in June that construction of the plant would be slightly delayed because of severe local traffic congestion.
According to the report, people familiar with TSMC’s plans said construction of its second Japanese plant could be further delayed and the start-up date could no longer be accurately predicted.
