Radioactive gas leak at Japanese nuclear power plant

Radioactive gas leaked from the Jiji Press Kansai Electric Power Company plant in ?i, Fukui Prefecture, Wednesday, Japanese authorities said, according to a report.

Sources said that at about 12:50 on the same day, radioactive gas began to leak from the exhaust shaft of Unit 3 of the Oiwa nuclear power plant, which lasted for about 20 minutes. The radiation monitor value of the exhaust shaft then rose significantly, up to about 2.5 times normal.

The Kansai Electric Power Company said the release of radioactive energy was below levels required to be reported to the Japanese authorities and claimed there was no effect on the surrounding environment.
