According to the China Manned Space Engineering Office, the names of the lunar landing suit and the manned lunar rover for China’s manned lunar exploration mission have been decided recently after public consultation and selection. The lunar landing suit is named“Wangyu.”, the manned lunar rover was named“Exploration”.
In September and October, following the 2023’s first public call for names for new spacecraft for manned lunar exploration missions, the 2024 The China Manned Space Engineering Office launched a campaign to solicit the names of lunar landing suits and Rovers for manned lunar exploration missions, arousing widespread concern and enthusiastic participation from the whole society, we have received more than 9000 contributions from organizations and people from all walks of life in the fields of aerospace, science and technology, and cultural communication. After selection and evaluation by experts, the lunar landing suit was named“Wangyu” and the manned lunar rover was named“Exploration”.
The names of lunar landing suits and manned lunar rovers have distinct Chinese characteristics, time characteristics and cultural characteristics. “Wangyu” means to look out into the cosmos and explore the unknown. It echoes the“Flying” extravehicular spacesuit used to fly the space station. It means that after the dream of flying in space is realized and a“Space home” is built, china has embarked on a new journey to land a man on the moon and look into deep space. At present, the“Yuwang” lunar landing suit and the“Exploration” manned lunar rover have entered the preliminary prototype development stage, and all work is progressing smoothly.
