On the 13th, local time, German Chancellor Scholtz, during an election campaign in Bielefeld, reiterating its opposition to president-elect Trans’s call for NATO countries to increase their defense budgets to 5 percent of their gross domestic product.
Scholtz said a defence budget of 5 per cent of gross domestic product would mean military spending of more than $200bn, compared with the current federal budget of less than $500bn. But Scholtz promised to stick to a NATO target of at least 2% of GDP for military spending.
On the same day, German defense minister Pistorius also said that he did not agree with Donald Trump’s request to raise NATO members’ defense spending to 5% of GDP.
