Gutterres called on all parties to the Syrian conflict to return to the political process

Un secretary-general Gutterres on Friday called on all parties to the Syrian conflict to return to the un-sponsored political process to end the bloodshed, and urged the immediate provision of humanitarian assistance to Syrian civilians.

Gutterres said at a news conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York that he had just discussed the latest situation with Turkish president Erdo?an on the phone. The latest developments in the situation in Syria have put tens of thousands of civilians at risk. The parties concerned have an obligation under international law to protect civilians.

Gutterres stressed there had been a “Collective setback” to the de-escalation arrangements that had failed to achieve a genuine national ceasefire and a serious political process to implement Security Council resolutions. “This has to change”.

Gutterres called on all parties to “Engage seriously” with the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for Syria, Kai-ru PEI, in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, develop“New, inclusive and comprehensive” solutions to the crisis.

Since November 27, the Syrian government forces and armed opposition and extremist groups in the north-west of Syria and other areas of a large-scale exchange of fire.
