Republic of Korea Armed Forces is conducting a naval artillery drill on the Northwest Islands

Yonhap news agency, Seoul, November 27-27, the Republic of Korea Armed Forces stationed in Baengnyeongdo used the K-9 self-propelled gun to carry out a naval artillery drill on the Northwest Island.

The 6th Brigade of the Marine Corps under the Northwest Islands Defense Command conducted a 30-minute self-propelled gun exercise at 1 p.m. , according to marine command, more than 200 shells were fired. The 6th Brigade fired toward a virtual target in the west, avoiding the Northern line (NLL) . The Marine Corps said that the Northwest Island Defense Command will enhance the Marine Corps’ firepower capability through routine sea-based artillery exercises in the future, and effectively strengthen the combat readiness.

This is the fourth time this year that the Marine Corps has conducted a naval artillery drill off the Northwest Islands. Republic of Korea Armed Forces halted the exercise after the two Koreas signed the September 19 Military Accord in 2018. But until then, Republic of Korea Armed Forces had conducted the exercises on a quarterly basis and Pyongyang was sensitive to Republic of Korea Armed Forces’s use of the K-9 self-propelled gun near the northern border. On November 23,2010, North Korea launched an attack on Yeonpyeong Island with rocket launchers and Coast Republic of Korea Armed Forces under the pretext that its troops were conducting artillery drills, killing four South Koreans.
