The Health and Safety Executive said a new strain of the monkeypox virus had been detected in the city.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, the monkeypox virus variant is Clade 1B. The patient is being treated in hospital and there is no evidence of community transmission. Less than 10 direct contacts have been traced since the case was confirmed on 29 October. The Health and Safety Executive said the “Risk to the UK remains low”.

This is the first time this strain of monkeypox virus has been found in the UK. Germany reported its first case of Clade 1B earlier this month.
