The latest report from amperometric analysis, an industry consulting firm, showed that, hollywood’s “Big Six” companies — Disney, Comcast, Google, Warner Bros. , discovery, Netflix and Paramount — will spend a record $126BN on content this year.

For the first time this year, the “Big Six” will account for more than half (50.6 per cent) of industry spending, up from 46.8 per cent in 2020 and 47.5 per cent in the 2023 sector, according to the industry report. Disney is expected to remain the world’s largest contributor to content, with $35.8 bn of spending, or 14.4 per cent of the market. That’s largely because Disney bought the streaming platform Hulu from Comcast earlier this year, with Comcast in second place with $24.5 billion. That was followed by Google ($17.6 billion) , Warner ($16.8 billion) and Netflix ($16 billion) , followed by Paramount ($15.1 billion) .

Netflix overtook Paramount this year because of its push for original content development. Netflix has spent an average of $14.5 billion a year on original and acquired programming since the outbreak, and it has bought rights to events like the NFL and WWE, spending is expected to rise further next year.

Ampere also found that the six industry giants are now looking to invest more overseas, such as Netflix, which for the first time ordered large amounts of content outside the United States in a single quarter. Because of the production shutdowns caused by the previous Hollywood writers and actors’ strike, these platforms have gradually shifted to a more global strategy to support their layouts. This year, for example, international programming accounted for 52 percent of Netflix’s spending, while“Paramount +” international spending accounted for 40 percent.

Peter Inghram, research manager at Ampere, predicted that overall growth would level off as the industry’s giants rebalance output, and “Expect lower levels of growth in the sector more generally this year”.
