On October 30, local time, Mexico’s National Supreme Court formally announced that eight justices had simultaneously tendered their resignations to the Senate, and announced that they would not participate in the first judicial elections due to judicial reform next June.

The resignation of eight of Mexico’s 11 Supreme Court justices could mean a deep restructuring. The Senate will be responsible for appointing new judges to fill the vacancies.

On 11 September, the Mexican Senate adopted the judicial reform programme by a vote in plenary session. The reform programme includes the election of Justices and magistrates by universal suffrage and the reduction of the number of Supreme Court judges from 11 to 9.
