At a regular press conference held by the Foreign Ministry on September 9, some reporters asked questions about the so-called“Updated Hong Kong business warning” issued by the US government on the 6th, hong Kong’s national security law and the Protection of National Security Ordinance, which came into force in March, have further eroded Hong Kong’s fundamental freedoms and human rights. US companies operating in Hong Kong increasingly face the same risks as those operating in the Chinese mainland. How Do you comment?
In response, spokesperson Mao Ning said that the US had concocted the so-called “Updated Hong Kong business warning” to unnecessarily slander the territory’s national security law and tarnish its business environment. The Chinese side firmly opposed this and strongly condemned it. With the enactment of the National Security Law and the maintenance of national security ordinance, the rule of law and the business environment in Hong Kong have improved, further consolidating the foundation for long-term prosperity and stability.
Mao Ning said the number of new local companies and non-local companies incorporated in Hong Kong had reached a record high in the first half of this year, according to the latest HKSAR Government report. According to the 2024 World Competitiveness Annual Report, Hong Kong ranks fifth in the world in terms of competitiveness. Last year, it was the fourth largest recipient of foreign direct investment and the 10th largest commodity trading economy in the world. The US side should respect objective facts, respect China’s sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong, and speak and act cautiously on Hong kong-related issues.
