Thuringia  Thüringen?Land’s AFD won the most votes in a state assembly election in eastern Germany on Monday, becoming the largest party in the region, according to preliminary results, Reuters said. Reported that this makes the afd since the Second World War, Germany’s first to win state assembly elections of the far-right party. In Saxony ? Sachsen?Land, the CDU won 31.9% of the vote, ahead of the afd, which won 30.6% . Reuters said the afd advocated nationalism and anti-immigration.

In a statement to Reuters, Scholtz said that as a member of the Social Democratic Party, “The afd results in Saxony ? Sachsen?Land and Thuringia ? Thüringen?Land are worrying. Our country should not and must not get used to this situation. The AFD is destroying Germany. It is crippling the economy, dividing society and damaging our national reputation.”

With a year to go before national elections, the results on September 1st Penalised Scholtz’s coalition, Reuters said. All three parties in Thuringia ? Thüringen?Land’s ruling coalition suffered defeats, with the Social Democratic Party of Scholtz, the chancellor, winning just 6.1 per cent of the vote. Neither the Greens nor the Lib Dems have the 5 per cent threshold to enter the state legislature.

Scholtz was reported to have said that “Sunday’s result was painful and so are we”, but added that the more dire prediction was that the SPD could lose the state assembly for the first time, it didn’t happen.

Reuters said Sunday’s results could force the German government to take a tougher line on immigration and fuel the debate over pro-ukraine issues that have dominated the campaign.
