US President Joe Biden and his rival, former President Donald Trump, have accused each other of emboldening Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.\u00a0The two men also attacked each other\u2019s foreign policy record during the presidential debate hosted by CNN on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Trump argued that Biden has damaged America\u2019s reputation on the world stage, and that it was one of the factors that convinced Russian President Vladimir Putin to launch a military operation in February 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we had a president that was respected by Putin, he would have never invaded Ukraine,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump said.\u00a0\u201c[Biden] did nothing to stop it. You know, I think he encouraged Russia [to] go in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The former president suggested that Putin\u00a0\u201csaw the incompetence\u201d<\/em>\u00a0of Washington during the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in 2021. It was\u00a0\u201cthe most embarrassing moment in the history of our country,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump said.\u00a0\u201cWhen Putin saw that, he said, \u2018You know what, I think we\u2019re going to go in [Ukraine],\u2019\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n

When it was Biden\u2019s turn to speak, he insisted that it was Trump who\u00a0\u201cencouraged Putin.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThis guy told [Putin], \u2018Do whatever you want.\u2019 And that\u2019s exactly what Trump did to Putin \u2013 encouraged him,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Biden said.\u00a0Trump interjected, saying\u00a0\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Asked by CNN\u2019s Dana Bash if the peace terms proposed by Putin to Ukraine are\u00a0\u201cacceptable to you,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump replied:\u00a0\u201cNo, they\u2019re not acceptable.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0He then reiterated his claim that he would\u00a0\u201chave that war settled\u201d<\/em>\u00a0if reelected.<\/p>\n

Biden stressed that the US must continue helping Ukraine and claimed that Russia could potentially attack a NATO country in the future.\u00a0\u201cIf [Putin] takes Ukraine, what do you think will happen to Poland?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Biden told the audience watching at home.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ve never heard so much foolishness. This is a guy who wants to get out of NATO,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said about Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe keeps talking about, go ahead, let Putin go in and control Ukraine, and then move on to Poland and other places. What happens then?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
