Actress and singer\u00a0Selena Gomez<\/a>\u00a0continues to be outspoken about mental health following her diagnosis with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n

The former Disney star announced her diagnosis in 2020 during an Instagram Live video call with fellow Disney Channel standout\u00a0Miley Cyrus<\/a>. Gomez has since described this discovery as a relief, although not an easy path.<\/p>\n

In a recent episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, Gomez \u2013 the co-founder of mental health publication Wondermind \u2013 shared details about her journey to diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Fellow musician and husband Benny Blanco asked his wife if she knew she\u00a0was bipolar<\/a>\u00a0before being officially diagnosed.<\/p>\n

“I knew something was wrong, but I think I was misdiagnosed,” she responded. “I think people were just assuming \u2013 and I would try multiple therapists.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s actually really hard when we\u2019re talking about these things, and for me to go, \u2018Go get a therapist.\u2019 All of it is so \u2026 complicated.”<\/p>\n

Gomez detailed how her diagnosis required talking to “multiple different people,” stressing the importance of not giving up.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m so grateful I went to four different rehabs because it all helped me understand it,” she said.<\/p>\n

Blanco revealed that Gomez sometimes experiences a\u00a0manic episode<\/a>\u00a0without recognizing it.<\/p>\n

“She\u2019ll start to realize she\u2019s having it after it\u2019s happening, and sometimes she doesn\u2019t even remember when it\u2019s happening,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s such a delicate thing because \u2026 you\u2019re not supposed to, technically, talk to the person about it while they\u2019re deep in it.”<\/p>\n

Blanco added that Gomez is “so hyper aware” of when she\u2019s experiencing mania.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m equally proud to say that I do have moments of mania,” she said. “I\u2019m not ashamed at all, because I can catch them a bit quicker.”<\/p>\n

“It is helpful to have a partner who will understand \u2026 and meet you where you are,” the singer added.<\/p>\n

Since her diagnosis, Gomez said she lives life more “freely.”<\/p>\n

“The whole hypocrisy of shaming people for therapy, or people not understanding it, is that it\u2019s just not for you,” she said. “But for me, it finally allowed me to go, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s why I handled things the way I [did]. That\u2019s why all the other people were able to get over things quickly, and I wasn\u2019t.'”<\/p>\n

Gomez added, “I\u2019d act out of fear, I\u2019d act out of love, I\u2019d act out of passion, it was all inconsistent. It was crazy.”<\/p>\n

The actress encouraged others that no matter the diagnosis, “you are not defined by a term.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s just informative to seek and talk and listen to podcasts or listen to certain things that will help you get information,” she said. “I do believe there is a lot of hope.”<\/p>\n

About 2.8% of adults in the U.S. have experienced bipolar in the last year, while 4.4% experience it during their lifetime, according to the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n

Formerly called manic depression or “manic-depressive disorder,” bipolar disorder is characterized by dramatic shifts in mood, energy and activity levels, affecting the ability to carry out daily tasks.<\/p>\n

Symptoms can differ depending on bipolar type.<\/p>\n
