According to the arrangement, the Asian and Oceanic member countries will be the first to release their reserves, while the oil reserves of the American and European member countries will be released to the market gradually from the end of March. On the 11th of this month, the 32 member countries of the International Energy Agency unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of strategic oil reserves. According to the announcement on the 15th, of the 400 million barrels of strategic oil reserves agreed to be released by the member countries, 271.7 million barrels came from the member government reserves, 116.6 million barrels came from industry reserves, and another 23.6 million barrels came from other channels. Of the planned oil release, about 72 percent was crude oil, and 28 percent was finished oil.

Currently, the International Energy Agency members hold more than 1.2 billion barrels of public emergency oil reserves, plus about 600 million barrels of corporate reserves controlled by the member governments. This release of stocks is the sixth since the agency‘s establishment in 1974 and the largest one.

Rising energy prices have already affected the lives of ordinary people in many countries. According to the Hindustan Times, hot food and beverages are disappearing from menus in kitchens in many parts of India due to gas shortages. Chefs are switching to making simpler meals to reduce fuel consumption. The Delhi High Court canteen has stopped serving full meals and is serving only sandwiches. At a car parts factory in Gujarat, the canteen has reduced fried foods and replaced hot tea with lemonade. The canteen at the Bengalore branch of India‘s Tata Consulting Company has also reduced cooking foods, while encouraging employees to bring their own meals.

Japan, a member of the International Energy Agency, initiated the release of its strategic oil reserves on the same day, according to Japan‘s Sankei Shimbun on Friday.
