(AP) \u2014 The man accused of killing seven people and injuring dozens more at\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-chicago-4b266791802b8d5154efb1bacff3fb38\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">a 2022 Independence Day parade in a Chicago suburb<\/a><\/span>\u00a0rejected a deal requiring him to plead guilty to seven charges of murder Wednesday in a stunning courtroom scene just days before the second anniversary of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing in a Lake County courtroom, Robert E. Crimo III, 23, refused to accept the agreement that prosecutors said would mean a life sentence for him in the\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-july-4-parade-shooting-92b50feb80c19afe7842b9caf08545cb\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Highland Park shooting.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Ben Dillon told Judge Victoria Rossetti that attorneys had discussed an agreement requiring Crimo to plead guilty to seven counts of first-degree murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. He would be imprisoned for life and ineligible for release on the murder counts.<\/p>\n<p>As family members of people killed and others wounded in the mass shooting watched, Rossetti asked Crimo if the agreement described was what he discussed with his attorneys. Crimo remained silent before looking back at his parents seated in a front-row bench.<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"2\"><\/div>\n<p>Defense attorneys Greg Ticsay and Anton Trizna briefly spoke with Crimo at the defense table before Rossetti suggested they go back into a private room. When they returned, the judge asked Crimo whether he wanted to go forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n<p>Many in the full courtroom had hoped to give statements in court Wednesday and were left baffled by the abrupt change. One man held up a middle finger to Crimo\u2019s parents as they exited the courtroom ahead of a private meeting that prosecutors held with victims.<\/p>\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"HTMLModuleEnhancement-embed\">\n<div class=\"HtmlModule\" data-module-tracksubscribe=\"\" data-gtm-topic=\"No Value\" data-module-number=\"1\" data-main-module-number=\"1\"><a id=\"html-embed-module-e30000\" class=\"AnchorLink\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"taboola_readmore\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"embed-caption\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After the hearing, Lake County State\u2019s Attorney Eric Rinehart said his team met with the victims in support, calling it \u201cnecessary\u201d after the hearing. He said prosecutors will be ready for trial set for February and declined to answer questions since the case remains open.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo\u2019s public defenders left court without speaking with reporters. A message left at their office wasn\u2019t immediately returned Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"3\"><\/div>\n<p>Prosecutors initially charged Crimo with 21 counts of first-degree murder \u2014 three counts for each person killed \u2014 as well as 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery.<\/p>\n<p>Family members of people killed said they hoped Wednesday would bring some closure ahead of the Fourth of July holiday. Instead, they plan to refocus on a trial and accused Crimo of seeking another opportunity to hurt them and all victims.<\/p>\n<p>Some felt Crimo was looking at them, not his parents, as the silent courtroom awaited his answer about the proposed agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard, it\u2019s hard, just to come in here and see the person that took my dad, it\u2019s not something that you want to do,\u201d said Karina Mendez, whose father Eduardo Uvaldo was killed.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/shootings-survivors-trauma-grief-aftermath-9be86ffdf895034e0dbf9325bc08cd29\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Leah Sundheim\u2019s<\/a><\/span>\u00a0mother, Jacquelyn, also was among the victims killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll I wanted was to be able to fully grieve my mom without the looming trial, knowing that he was going to spend the rest of his life in jail,\u201d Sundheim said. \u201cInstead, we were yet again shown his complete and blatant disregard for humans, or anyone, for all of us in that courtroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"4\"><\/div>\n<p>She said now they face months of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people were wounded in the 2022 shooting. The wounded ranged in age from their 80s down to an\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/highland-park-july-4-shooting-shootings-chicago-illinois-1c135517fe60c15993fd09113e8e6c39\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">8-year-old boy<\/a><\/span>\u00a0who was left partially paralyzed.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses described initial confusion as the shots began, followed by panic as families fled the parade route through downtown Highland Park, leaving behind chairs, bicycles and strollers in the rush to find safety inside nearby businesses or homes.<\/p>\n<p>The criminal case has proceeded slowly for months. At one point, Crimo insisted he wanted to\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mass-shooting-highland-park-fourth-of-july-d2c6bdc994dbd07f08b344e6e8d45c46\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">fire his public defenders<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and represent himself. He abruptly\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/highland-park-shooting-fourth-july-parade-crimo-d9bfacd34f4aede7320d385f5a4491d1\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">reversed that decision<\/a><\/span>\u00a0weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday\u2019s hearing was announced last week, though he was not scheduled to return to court until August. Crimo sat in a wheelchair during Wednesday\u2019s hearing, a change from prior appearances where he walked into and out of the room with deputies.<\/p>\n<p>Christopher Covelli, deputy chief with the Lake County Sheriff\u2019s Office, said Crimo \u201cinformed our correctional staff this morning that he was nervous and unsure if he\u2019d be able to walk in and out of the courtroom. For that reason, he was placed in a wheelchair for his movements.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"5\"><\/div>\n<p>Authorities have said the accused gunman confessed to police in the days after he opened fire from a rooftop in Highland Park, an affluent suburb that is home to about 30,000 people near the Lake Michigan shore. They said he initially fled to the Madison, Wisconsin, area and contemplated a second shooting at a parade there but returned to Chicago\u2019s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>Those killed in the attack were Katherine Goldstein, 64; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; and Eduardo Uvaldo, 69, and married couple Kevin McCarthy, 37, and Irina McCarthy, 35.<\/p>\n<div class=\"SovrnAd Advertisement sovrn-story-feed\" data-module=\"\" data-class=\"sovrn-story-feed\" data-delayadinsertion=\"\" data-ad-position=\"6\"><\/div>\n<p>The McCarthys\u2019 2-year-old son was\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/ac36dcb112e859cbb29699f45c6ceffb\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">found alone at the scene<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and eventually reunited with extended family members.<\/p>\n<p>All of them were from the Highland Park area except for Toledo-Zaragoza, who was visiting family in the city from Morelos, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The violence focused attention on\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gun-violence-us-supreme-court-chicago-shootings-politics-035c49fce2cd4f57dc3434b4b05a8369\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">Highland Park\u2019s 2013 ban on semi-automatic weapons<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and large-capacity magazines. Illinois officials have long contended that legal and illegal weapons are easily purchased in surrounding states, hampering even the toughest local laws\u2019 effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said that Crimo, a resident of nearby Highwood, legally purchased the rifle. But he first applied for a state gun license in 2019 when he was 19, too young to apply independently in Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>His father sponsored the application, though police reports show that months earlier a relative reported to police that Crimo III had threatened to \u201ckill everyone\u201d and had made several threats to kill himself.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors initially charged the father, Robert Crimo Jr., with seven felony counts of reckless conduct and he pleaded guilty in November\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/july-fourth-parade-shooting-crimo-father-6f8edc6923f5ec5c99707b8d1d905b28\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">to seven misdemeanor counts of reckless conduct<\/a><\/span>. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail and\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/crimo-jr-shooting-july-fourth-parade-highland-park-583e85cc63fff8cf12c3ffab4aea12f1\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">released early<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for good behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Crimo\u2019s father declined to speak with reporters following Wednesday\u2019s hearing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WAUKEGAN, Ill.
