The World Health Organization and its International Agency for Research on Cancer released their latest global research report on February 3rd, indicating that nearly 40% of cancer cases worldwide can be prevented.

The report estimates that about 37.8% of all new cancer cases in 2022 (about 7.1 million cases) were related to preventable factors, highlighting the enormous potential of prevention in alleviating the global cancer burden.

The report said that the new study investigated 30 preventable carcinogenic factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, high body mass index (BMI), lack of physical exercise, air pollution, etc., and 9 cancer-causing infections. The study covered data from multiple countries worldwide and 36 cancer types, identifying smoking as the world‘s top preventable carcinogenic factor, causing 15% of all new cancer cases, followed by infection (10%) and alcohol consumption (3%).

Globally, lung cancer, stomach cancer, and cervical cancer account for nearly half of all preventable cancer cases. Lung cancer is mainly associated with smoking and air pollution, stomach cancer is largely attributed to Helicobacter pylori infections, and cervical cancer is overwhelmingly caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).

“This is the first global analysis to reveal how much cancer risk stems from factors we can prevent,” said Dr. Irbavi, head of the WHO Cancer Control Group and author of the report. “By analyzing cancer patterns across different countries and populations, we can provide more specific information to governments and individuals across countries to help prevent the occurrence of many cancer cases.”

The report showed that men have a much higher proportion of preventable cancer cases than women, accounting for about 45% of male emerging cancer cases and about 30% of female cases. About 23% of all male emerging cancer cases are related to smoking, followed by infection (9%) and alcohol consumption (4%). About 11% of all female emerging cancer cases are related to infection, followed by smoking (6%) and high BMI (3%).

The research results highlight the need to develop local-appropriate prevention strategies, including adopting strong tobacco control measures, regulating alcohol use, vaccinating related vaccines to prevent virus infections such as HPV, improving air quality, strengthening workplace safety, and promoting healthier dietary practices.

Every year, February 4th is World Cancer Day.
