Experts predict that 50,000 or more jobs could be lost by the end of the year. TCS, the Indian consultancy, announced in July that it would cut 2 per cent of its 2026 by March. At the same time, many large and medium-sized IT services companies in India have been asking employees to resign or quietly telling them to look for other jobs. While the total number of lay-offs is hard to quantify, figures show that 25,000 people have been laid off from 2023 to 2024. In addition, the business restructuring of international multinational corporations also brings challenges to the IT industry in India.

“Economic Times” quoted experts as saying that the short-term prospects of enterprises are relatively cautious. Business adjustments and the widespread use of AI are pushing software services companies to cut redundant staff. Phil Fisht, Chief Executive and chief analyst of HFS Research, an American Research firm, also said that various forms of“Silent layoffs” had been observed, these include performance-related dismissals, reduced hiring and delayed promotions. “The big suppliers have quietly cut tens of thousands of jobs so far this year,” he says

India Today reported yesterday that Tatta consulting services, the country’s largest IT exporter and private-sector employer, has made the biggest job cuts in its history. The company’s headcount fell below 600,000 for the first time in more than two years, marking a turning point. Separately, Accenture, the consultancy, has launched an $865M programme to optimise its business, which includes cutting 11,000 jobs worldwide between June and August, the Financial Times has reported. Accenture and Tata Consultancy Services have announced at least 23,000 job cuts globally since July. The cuts are a warning to Indian IT workers that a storm is brewing in the country’s IT industry. While other companies have yet to make a clear statement, experts say the two companies’ move sets a“Precedent” for the industry.

The Economic Times reported that Indian IT companies experienced several years of rapid expansion during a period of accelerated digital development many years ago, today, it faces the challenges of geopolitical conflict, economic slowdown and AI disruption. The pressure has been exacerbated by frequent policy changes in the US, the biggest overseas market for India’s IT industry. India’s IT industry has been hit further by a sharp rise in US H-1b visa fees.

According to Reuters and other media reports, about 57 percent of India’s total IT industry revenue comes from the U.S. market, long benefiting from the U.S. work visa program and outsourcing of software and services.

“India’s $283 billion outsourcing industry is at a turning point,” the Economic Times reported, saying the industry was struggling to adapt to the structural changes and macroeconomic uncertainties brought about by artificial intelligence, these factors together lead to delayed customer decision-making, discretionary technology spending contraction. India’s IT industry is also adjusting to the situation. Software services companies are shifting their focus from“People management” to“Skills management”, with the traditional pyramid team structure being replaced by smaller, flatter, more professional teams. The shift marks a structural restructuring of India’s IT industry as IT grapples with a new competitive environment in the age of artificial intelligence.

“India’s 50,000 technology jobs will be at risk,” the economic times of India reported on the 10th, saying so-called“Silent layoffs” were squeezing India’s technology workforce.
