Gu Liyan, the new director-general of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) , met with Taiwanese leader William Lai to reaffirm American support for the island, Chinanews.com and Chinanews.com reported on July 11, it said this was in line with America’s longstanding\u201cOne China policy\u201d. According to a press release issued after the AIT meeting, Gu told William Lai that the US would continue to give strong support to Taiwan’s \u201cSelf-defence capability\u201d, according to Taiwan’s Zhongtian news website. The US will continue to support the island, in line with its longstanding \u201cOne China policy\u201d guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Taiwan Three Communiqu\u00e9s and the \u201cSix guarantees\u201d. But in Lai’s press release, only Gu was mentioned saying that the United States would continue to support Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. US support for Taiwan is also consistent with a long-standing US policy guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the Three Communiqu\u00e9s and the six guarantees.<\/p>\n
Taiwanese media said that both sides had written about the \u201cLaw on relations with Taiwan\u201d, the \u201cThree Communiqu\u00e9s law\u201d and the \u201cSix guarantees\u201d, but that the \u201cOne-china policy\u201d mentioned by the US had been \u201cSilenced\u201d in the LAI’s press release.<\/p>\n
